Subnautica 2 Best Builds & Biomod Loadouts (2026 Early Access Meta)
I've respecced my Biomods about six times now and I think I've finally landed on setups that actually work for different playstyles. The thing about Subnautica 2's progression is that it's not linear. You can't just unlock everything and equip it all. Slot limits force choices and some combinations synergize in ways the game never explains.
Here are the builds I've tested across solo and 4-player co-op runs. Some of these took embarrassingly long to figure out.
The Explorer Setup (Best for Solo)
This is the build I use 80% of the time. It's built around covering ground fast and not dying while scanning dangerous creatures.
For Biomods, you want the Bioluminescent Vision from scanning those jellyfish in the Shallows. It sounds minor but it eliminates the need for a flashlight entirely. Your second slot should be the Pressure Adaptation mod from deep-water fauna scans. At tier 2 this reduces oxygen consumption by roughly a third beyond 100 meters. In practice this means you can stay at 300 meters for almost two minutes without an upgraded tank.
The Tadpole chassis should absolutely be the Scout variant. It trades storage for speed and handling. With the Scout chassis you can outrun every predator I've encountered except the big one in the Trench, and honestly nothing outruns that thing.
For equipment, carry the Scanner (obviously), Repair Tool, a Beacon or two, and the basic Knife. Skip the flashlight since Bioluminescent Vision handles lighting. Your inventory stays light and you move fast.
I clocked my exploration range with this build at roughly triple what I covered with a default loadout in the same time. The speed compounds.
The Harvester (Solo or Co-op Resource Runs)
When I need to stockpile titanium and rare minerals for a base expansion, I switch to this.
Biomods: Enhanced Grip Strength from scanning the rock-crawling arthropods in the Reef Shelf. This doubles the resources you get from each outcropping node. Combine it with Mineral Sense, which highlights resource nodes within maybe 50 meters through walls. You'll see ore deposits glowing faintly even through terrain.
The Tadpole gets the Cargo chassis. Big storage, slow as hell. You park it near a resource cluster and shuttle back and forth. Works fine as long as nothing aggressive is patrolling nearby.
A tip about Mineral Sense: it has a weird interaction with the Scanner Room. If you have both active, the highlights overlap and create this blinding mess on your HUD. Turn off Scanner Room cameras before activating Mineral Sense. Took me two hours of squinting to figure that out.
Co-op Specialized Roles
With four players you can actually specialize. This is where the game shines brightest, honestly. My group runs three distinct roles and it covers everything.
The Scout runs the Explorer build above. They find points of interest, mark them with Beacons, and identify threats before the group rolls in. They're basically never at the base. Always out mapping.
The Builder stays near base. They run the Structural Integrity Biomod from scanning the coral-like organisms on the Reef Shelf. It gives base pieces a durability boost. Not essential for a small base but critical once you're building moonpools and scanner rooms deep underwater.
The Gatherer runs the Harvester setup and does nothing but resource runs. With Enhanced Grip Strength at tier 3, a single limestone node drops five or six titanium instead of two. Resource scarcity basically vanishes once you have a dedicated Gatherer.
The fourth player flexes between helping the Gatherer and doing story progression. They usually run the Creature Empathy Biomod, which reduces aggression radius from most fauna by about 40%. It's not pacifism but it means stalker-types ignore you unless you swim directly into them.
Base Power: Thermal Is Still King
I tried solar. I tried bioreactors. The only power source that doesn't require constant babysitting is thermal. Find a heat vent. Stick four Thermal Plants on it. Connect with Power Transmitters. Done.
Bioreactors are fine as a supplement but they chew through fuel surprisingly fast. One Marblemelon plant feeds you but four plants barely keep a single bioreactor running through the night. Solar panels are useless below about 80 meters. Thermal plants work everywhere as long as you route the power properly.
I built my main base near the volcanic fissure in the Shallows. It's maybe 60 meters from the vent to my base. Three transmitters and everything has unlimited power. Haven't touched it in 20 hours.
Tadpole Chassis Decisions
There are four chassis variants I've found so far. The Scout and Cargo I already covered. The Deep chassis increases crush depth by about 100 meters equivalent. The Speed chassis is actually different from Scout, despite the name similarity. Speed gives you straight-line velocity. Scout gives you handling and turn radius.
For most situations I recommend Scout. The tight turning radius saves you from more predator encounters than raw speed ever will. But for the deep biome runs past 500 meters, swap to Deep. The extra depth buffer matters more than agility when everything down there can two-shot your Tadpole.
One last thing about the chassis system: you can't swap chassis in the field. You need to be docked at a Moonpool. Plan your loadout before leaving base. Nothing worse than realizing you brought the Cargo chassis to a Leviathan fight.
Biomod Synergies Worth Knowing
Some Biomods interact in ways the game doesn't document anywhere. Bioluminescent Vision combined with Electric Discharge triggers a full-area sonar ping every time you get hit. Not exactly worth taking damage for but it reveals every creature in a huge radius. Useful information in chaotic fights when you need to know what you're dealing with.
Mineral Sense and Enhanced Grip Strength together make resource runs absurdly efficient. You see every node through walls and each node drops double resources. I've filled the Cargo Tadpole completely in under ten minutes with this combo. It almost feels broken, like the devs didn't test this combination thoroughly.
Pressure Adaptation and Tissue Regeneration stack defensively in a way that makes you nearly unkillable at mid depths. Less oxygen consumption means you can stay at depth longer. Passive healing means the small hits you take from environmental hazards and minor fauna become irrelevant. This is my default Biomod pair for any expedition past 300 meters and I haven't found anything better.
The one combo that actively doesn't work: Creature Empathy and Electric Discharge. The discharge triggers when you're attacked. Empathy reduces attack frequency. They cancel each other out in practice. Pick one defensive Biomod and commit. Mixing them wastes a slot you can't afford to lose.
I'm still experimenting with different combinations as I unlock more of the tree. The full Biomod catalog hasn't been fully cracked yet and Unknown Worlds might add more in future updates. For now, the builds above cover every situation I've encountered on Proteus. If you find something better, the community would love to hear about it. We're all still figuring this game out together.
